Laser Therapy for Decreased Inflammation and Pain Management

Written By Thorassic Park on March 16, 2020

Laser Therapy for Decreased Inflammation and Pain ManagementImagine a painless injury treatment that only takes a few minutes with no side effects on your body. That’s exactly what laser therapy does!

Cold laser therapy, as it’s commonly known, uses light from a handheld laser device to treat various conditions through a process known as photobiostimulation – which works like photosynthesis, but on humans.

During this treatment, a therapist puts the laser arrays close to your skin, allowing the non-thermal photons of light energy to penetrate the tissues of the affected area. The cells will absorb this light energy and use it to restore their normal function. With the increased metabolism, the body's natural ability to heal is enhanced, leading to quick healing of injured and damaged tissues. In turn, you’re relieved of pain and inflammation.

Conditions Treated by Laser Therapy

Since laser therapy is effective on all types of cells, it can treat or manage many conditions, including:

  • Knee, neck, and back pain
  • Arthritis (inflammation of joints)
  • Fibromyalgia (widespread musculoskeletal pain)
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome (tingling sensation or numbness on the hands or arms caused by pinched nerves in the wrist)
  • Tendonitis (inflammation of tissues connecting bone muscles)
  • Various skin problems such as acne, vertigo, and dermatitis
  • Relieving difficult-to-heal wounds
  • An alternative to acupuncture: The laser beams stimulate the acupoints without piercing through the skin

Visit your laser therapist to know whether you’re a good candidate for this procedure.

What to Expect During Laser Therapy

Since cold laser therapy is non-toxic and doesn’t heat or cut the body, it's 100% safe and you shouldn't expect any discomfort.

Depending on the size of the area being treated, the procedure takes between 5 to 20 minutes. For instance, lower back pain treatment would take longer than wrist treatment since more tissue area gets covered. While you can start feeling relief after just one session, you’re more likely to start seeing results after 3-5 sessions of the laser therapy.
